Strategies for a more comfortable, eco-friendly summer with white roofs

Immediate Reduction of Thermal Overload

Applying reflective white paint coatings to roofs and floors is an effective way of preventing building structures from overheating. This technique reduces the absorption of solar heat, thereby lowering the temperature inside buildings. As a result, summer comfort for occupants is greatly improved without systematic recourse to air conditioning.

Energy savings and sustainability

The energy savings associated with reducing air-conditioning use are substantial. Reduced energy demand for cooling translates into significantly lower energy costs for occupants and building managers. What’s more, this approach contributes to the durability of waterproofing and limits roofing maintenance costs, offering a sustainable solution.

Positive environmental impact

The environmental impact of adopting reflective surfaces is also significant. By reducing CO2 emissions from air conditioning, this strategy contributes directly to the fight against climate change. According to studies, increasing reflectivity in major cities could result in an immediate reduction of 57 billion tonnes of CO2, underlining the importance of such measures in global climate strategies.

MAESTRIA's Sustainable Approach

Anticipating the Tertiary Decree

As part of the ELAN Law (Evolution du Logement, de l’Aménagement et du Numérique), the “Eco Energie Tertiaire” scheme, commonly known as the Tertiary Decree, highlights the regulatory obligation to achieve energy efficiency and sobriety in France’s tertiary sector. Tertiary sector buildings, which account for a third of final energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, are now subject to ambitious targets for the progressive reduction of final energy consumption. These regulations reinforce the importance of implementing effective strategies to improve summer comfort while reducing environmental impact.

Taking immediate action to increase the reflectivity of roofs and floors is a key strategy for improving summer comfort, reducing energy costs and contributing to environmental sustainability. The commitment of industrial players like MAESTRIA and compliance with regulatory requirements such as the tertiary sector decree are essential to accelerate the transition to greener, more resilient buildings.

In the building and construction industry, identifying compatible substrates is essential to guarantee not only the quality and durability of the work carried out, but also its compliance with current standards and technological developments.
This is particularly true when applying products such as coatings or paints, where compatibility with the base materials is crucial to the success of the project.

The importance of media compatibility

Substrate compatibility ensures that applied materials work harmoniously with the substrates on which they are laid. This is vital to avoid problems such as delamination, cracking or undesirable chemical reactions that can compromise the building’s structural integrity and long-term functionality.

MAESTRIA: Commitment to Research and Development

MAESTRIA, as Europe’s leading paint manufacturer, perfectly illustrates the importance of this compatibility. The company is committed to ongoing research and development to extend the range of substrates compatible with its products. This proactive approach guarantees not only the broad applicability of its solutions, but also ongoing innovation to meet the increasingly specific requirements of construction and renovation projects.

TB SYSTEM Compatible Substrates: Waterproofing and Durability

Among the substrates TB SYSTEM adapts to are bituminous waterproofing, non-asbestos fibro and steel decking. These materials are widely used in modern industrial construction for their waterproofing, strength and durability. Compatibility with these substrates is therefore essential to ensure effective protection against the elements, increased longevity of structures, and a positive contribution to the energy efficiency of buildings.

By identifying and validating compatibility with a wide range of substrates, BVS Anticoral not only meets the immediate needs of construction projects. The company also contributes to a sustainable vision of the building industry, offering solutions that enhance occupant comfort, reduce maintenance and repair requirements, and minimize the environmental impact of construction.

Improve the yield of your photovoltaic system with TB SYSTEM white roofs

External studies and our own experience show that the cool roof’s influence on heating energy consumption in winter is negligible, and is largely offset by its positive influence on air conditioning consumption in summer. The annual energy balance is therefore favourable for the TB SYSTEM system.

THERMOSTRIA, is a paint certified with high technical performance ERP standard and photovoltaic panels in the event of fire BRoof(t3) approved.

There are two interesting advantages to installing “solar” panels on white cladding such as TB System with THERMOSTRIA:

Thermal: reduction in the heat absorbed by the solar panel: gain = 30% in surface T°c.
Brightness: increase in solar energy captured by the solar panel on two-sided panels: 14% power gain compared with an untreated surface.
According to our installation report.
A solar panel loses 0.5% power per degree above 25°C.

The TB System coating considerably reduces the temperature undergone by the panel, and increases the power generated by the panel by up to +14% – compared with a “conventional” environment.

Technical information:

Bifacial solar panels are devices that capture sunlight on both their front and rear faces.

Solar cells on both sides of the panel convert this light into electricity, making the most of solar energy production by also capturing light reflected from the ground or other surrounding surfaces.

The company SOLAIRE WATT, which we have commissioned via our partner MAESTRIA, has recently undertaken research to further improve the efficiency of bifacial solar panels using the THERMOSTRIA system. This application has the particularity of better reflecting light towards the underside of the panels (SRI of 116), as well as diffusing it more evenly. The results of the tests carried out by the company have proved promising, especially as the return on investment for this technique is relatively short. Over 20 years, the return on investment is 2 years thanks to our system.

On single-sided modules: a solar panel captures not only the sun’s direct radiation, but also the radiation reflected (albedo) by surrounding surfaces (roofs, floors, walls, etc.). In a study by the University of Edinburgh on the efficiency of vertical panels, it is estimated that if 25% of the ground surface were “painted white”, the panels’ productivity gain would be +48%.
On bifacial modules: unlike single-sided modules, these new “bifacial” modules also capture radiation reflected from the underside of the panel. So the more reflective the environment and the panel’s support, the higher the panel’s yield. Bifaciality gains up to 25%!

Our TB SYSTEM coating has been specially designed for use on waterproofed roofs. It will have no negative impact on the roof’s existing waterproofing: it is flexible enough to accommodate expansion of the roofing material, and will also protect your waterproofing from UV rays and extreme temperature variations. Interventions on bituminous waterproofing can be carried out using a simple protocol.

In addition, cool roof can be applied to walls all year round, for example in warehouses or refrigerators.

And in winter?

The influence of solar radiation on building temperature differs from season to season. In winter, the sun is lower than in summer: the roof is therefore less exposed, and most of the heat gain is due to the walls and windows (even more so when the roof is flat).

Moreover, radiation is less intense in winter (more frequent cloud cover, less energetic radiation).
